in response to stricter regulations and standards, power battery companies, including ningde times, yiwei lithium energy, vision power, xinwang da, beehive energy and other power battery companies, are actively deploying zero carbon transformation strategies, exploring battery carbon footprint, digital battery passport, recycled materials and traceability solutions. of course, in addition to battery companies, including great wall motor, gac aeon, vision power, penghui energy, zhongwei shares, nord shares, tianci materials, bang pu cycle and other related companies have also accelerated the pace of construction of zero-carbon factories.

in the construction progress of zero-carbon factories, ningde times and vision power can be said to be at the forefront of the industry. news shows that after sichuan times yibin factory became the world's first zero-carbon battery factory in march this year, in less than two years, ningde times has four factories into the list of zero-carbon factories, the number and speed of evaluation in the new energy industry is far ahead; vision power reported that it had achieved its operational carbon neutrality goal last year, making it the first battery technology company in the world to achieve operational carbon neutrality.

what is a true zero-carbon factory?

as we all know, industrial manufacturing is a key area of energy resource consumption and carbon emissions. according to statistics, industrial energy consumption accounts for about 70% of the total energy consumption of the whole society. when china's industry shifts from high-speed development to high-quality development, low-carbon has also become the main theme of industrial digital transformation. in addition, the green revolution led by the dual-carbon target has also swept the manufacturing industry, and innovative applications such as industrial carbon management and virtual power plants have been realized. this also promotes china's industrial production field to accelerate the continuous transformation to zero-carbon factories.

so what is a true zero-carbon factory? a zero-carbon plant is a plant that produces greenhouse gas emissions within the ghg emission accounting boundary within a specific time period (usually in annual terms) and achieves net zero carbon emissions by either self-abatement and removal by abatement projects outside the accounting boundary, or by offsetting by consuming a corresponding number of carbon credits. throughout the world, the current zero-carbon factory construction is still in its infancy, and up to now only a few domestic enterprises have passed the zero-carbon factory group standard certification.

in june last year, it was jointly prepared by tuv rheinland in collaboration with more than 20 authoritative institutions and leading enterprises such as vision technology group, bohe certification, shanghai energy efficiency center, unilever, etc., combining multiple experiences, following the scientific, authoritative and strict principles, after half a year of research, discussion, review and repeated revision. the world's first complete and quantifiable zero carbon factory construction standards and evaluation rules, "zero carbon factory evaluation code" group standard (t/ceca-g 0171-2022) was officially released, causing a huge response.

it is reported that the code has made clear instructions on the classification and evaluation methods of zero-carbon plants. zero-carbon plants are classified into two types, type i and type ii, based on the type of greenhouse gas sources within the accounting boundary. among them, the type i zero-carbon plant aims at the greenhouse gas sources directly emitted and removed, and the greenhouse gas indirectly emitted by the input energy. the type ii zero-carbon plant builds on the type i zero-carbon plant by adding indirect ghg sources from transportation and products used by organizations.

the two types of zero-carbon plants can be subdivided into four grades according to the final evaluation results, with six stars as the highest grade. for the six-star assessment, the requirements for a type i zero-carbon plant are 100% renewable electricity and 100% offsets; the type ii zero-carbon plant requires 100% renewable electricity and 100% cleanup. the introduction of the standard provides a clear basis and guidance for factories in the setting of carbon reduction goals, low-carbon project transformation, and new project planning.

in the global automotive industry chain carbon neutral environment, the global consensus is being established, the automotive industry to achieve the goal of zero carbon life cycle, the industry chain carbon reduction is equally important, power batteries and materials manufacturing and recycling process of carbon emissions. according to the report of the european federation of transport and environment, the carbon emission range of battery production is 61~106 kg co2/kwh, which can occupy more than 60% of the carbon emissions of the whole life cycle of electric vehicles, which can be said to be not to be underestimated.

zeng yuqun, founder and chairman of ningde times, said that into the era of comprehensive electrification, the power battery should not only be advanced, but also green; the carbon reduction contribution of pure electric vehicles in the fuel cycle is very obvious, and the carbon emission of power batteries in the whole life cycle of electric vehicles accounts for as high as 40%, so after the realization of comprehensive electrification, the carbon reduction of power batteries is also particularly important. at the two sessions in 2022, zeng yuqun submitted a proposal on accelerating the study of china's battery carbon footprint and establishing a mutual recognition mechanism between china and europe.

in order to realize the zero-carbon strategy, ningde times has achieved carbon reduction through four innovation systems in the five key nodes of mining, bulk raw materials, battery materials, cell manufacturing and battery systems. at the same time, credit projects are widely carried out at the supply chain end, and the sustainable development performance index of supply chain is formed through comprehensive evaluation of big data to help enterprises in the industrial chain find a sustainable development path. at the same time, participate in the research and design of battery passport, promote the transparency of the industry supply chain, battery life cycle traceability management and recycling.

in march last year, sgs, a world-renowned certification body, issued the pas2060 carbon neutral certification certificate for sichuan times, marking that sichuan times has achieved carbon neutrality and become the world's first zero-carbon battery factory. the plant uses the cfms management system to achieve active equipment control, saving 18,973 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon emissions by 19,792 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. through the quantified operation of the equipment and energy-saving production scheduling, it can save 12,373 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon emissions by 15,020 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent every year.

on october 2 this year, ningde times announced that chengdu xinjin times new energy technology co., ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary, has obtained the pas2060 carbon neutral certification certificate issued by sgs, a global certification body, and officially joined the ranks of zero-carbon factories, becoming the fourth zero-carbon factory of ningde times to obtain this certification. up to now, a total of four factories under the ningde era have been listed as zero-carbon factories, and the number and speed of assessments are far ahead in the new energy industry. we are making steady progress towards the goal of achieving carbon neutrality across the value chain by 2035.

according to ningde times, xinjin times will widely and deeply apply digital technology in the full link of carbon emission reduction in factories. xinjin times creates cfms smart plant management system to provide smart brain for green energy system, real-time detection of equipment status, collaborative optimization of the total energy consumption of the system and the status of each sub-equipment, safeguarding energy security and stability. at the same time, xinjin times carried out electric transformation of the company's logistics chain, and widely used electric transport vehicles to achieve zero-carbon operation from the supply chain to production to the user end.
